Life in Sarasota

No matter your lifestyle choices, Sarasota and Manatee Counties offer something for every taste. Contrary to popular belief, we are not just a sleepy retirement and beach town. Although if that is what you seek, we have that for you and among our many beautiful beaches is Siesta Key Beach, rated #1 beach in the nation for its powder soft quartz sand!

We are a thriving community with world class college programs, arts & entertainment, sports attractions, museums, shopping, dining, A-rated schools, and a wide range of things to do and places to visit, and are a home for celebrities and rockers like Michael Kors, Mick Jagger, Dickey Betts, Stu Cook, and Brian Johnson, landing us a spot in the cool category.

Our area offers world renowned athletic training programs such as IMG Academy and sought after pre-professional ballet training including International Ballet of Florida, the Sarasota Cuban Ballet, and Sarasota Ballet of Florida.
Our outstanding colleges include the preeminent arts college, Ringling College of Art + Design, drawing in students from all over the globe for their cutting edge programs, New College of Florida, FSU / Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training MFA, FSU School of Medicine, USF, and LECOM for Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dental Medicine.
Our sports enthusiasts enjoy being the Spring Training home to the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates, an epicenter to the world Rowing community, home to the annual Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix boat races, the PGA LECOM Suncoast Classic, and the Sarasota Polo Club in Lakewood Ranch where residents enjoy seasonal polo matches. And, we are only a short drive to St. Petersburg and Tampa where residents can catch the Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tampa Bay Lightning play.
Our world class arts community includes notable local professional organizations such as the Sarasota Opera, West Coast Symphony Orchestra, Sarasota Ballet of Florida, Sarasota Contemporary Dance, Florida Studio Theatre, Asolo Repertory, and West Coast Black Theatre Troupe as well as a wide array of national and international touring musicians, broadway shows, and dance companies that perform in our local performing arts theaters. With this area’s rich circus history and as the former winter headquarters of the Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus, it’s common to bump into legendary circus families who still reside here such as the Flying Wallendas and Flying Gaonas. We have several circuses that raise their tents annually and the area offers circus arts training programs for those wanting to learn the art of trapeze, tightrope walking, and more.
We have a variety of boating, yacht and sailing clubs, country clubs, public golf courses and fitness clubs, as well as museums, botanical gardens, aquariums and research laboratories like Mote Marine where they conduct important research for our world’s reefs and oceans, rehabilitate injured sea friends in their hospital, monitor the health of our local waters and educate the community. Additionally, we have several wildlife habitats and rescue organizations including Big Cat Habitat, Myakka Elephant Ranch, Pelican Man’s Bird Sanctuary, and Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida.
When you want to get out of town for a little break, a staycation in Florida is easy from Sarasota. Theme parks like Busch Gardens, Universal Orlando, Sea World, and Walt Disney World are in close range for short day trips or overnight stays. Getaways to historic St. Augustine, the Florida Keys, or the many clear Springs throughout the state are popular, and when wanting to experience a busier city, a drive to Tampa, Orlando, or Miami is an ideal option. For those vacations when you need to fly or for commuters living here in paradise, Sarasota Bradenton Airport (SRQ) is convenient with many major airlines flying in and out daily. For more flight options, we are a short drive to three more airports in Tampa, St. Pete/Clearwater, and Fort Myers. For residents with their own private planes, hangars may be available at Dolphin Aviation next to SRQ or at Venice Municipal Airport.

Whether you seek to live waterfront on the Gulf of Mexico, desire high-rise condo life or a historic bungalow in walkable Downtown Sarasota, a cozy beach cottage, a jaw dropping canal or Bayfront home, a quiet suburban neighborhood, a country club community, a boating, equestrian, or aviation community (Yes! We actually have that!), or sprawling acreage out in the country, we have it all right here!
